Stage of relationship with the supplier at the time of the incident:
On 29th July 2019, I received email and whatsapp message from the company and an individual saying that they are UK based paper manufacturer and they have offices in many countries. They can supply A4 copy paper at Euro 4,720 for 20 ft FCL, which means at $0.45-0.55 per ream approx, they also said that they could do door-to-door delivery including custom duty in India for little additional amount as they have air freight services. They misguided me that custom duty is not payable if it is on air freight. The person who contacted me on whatsapp told his name Mr Alan David Goschalk. He also provided me company registration certificate, VAT number and suggested me to visit UK government Company House web site to verify. They were very much pushy to make the deal ASAP
I checked the UK government web site and found all the details such as registration number, name of the CEO, address, phone etc correct. Then I googled Paperback and found another company with little variation in the name as Paperbackpaper, I opened the link and realized the address is exactly same as previous one but the email id, telephone and fax numbers were totally different. I emailed on their id asking authenticity of previous email and the source. Next day, to my surprise, I received a reply from them as….
Please don’t buy from the below company in the email.
They are a fraudulent company using our details.
Please can you report this to your local police.
If you need any other questions please don’t hesitate to ask.
Suggestions : 1)try to Google with similar business name by making some name combinations like Paper-back to paperback etc
2) check email id. .if it is not using company domain but gmail.com especially if the company Web site has different id
3)don’t rely on whatsapp number provided on email because professional companies mostly use landlines phone
4)verify company address, phone, fax, email with that provided on email
5) Most important. ..send paper mail (hard copy) or paper Letter of Intent or Purchase Order, without emailing scan copy, at the company’s address provided on the website. This ensures delivery to right person
6) send advance amount by bank draft at the address by registered post/courier and get acknowledgement, if the supplier agrees
Number 5 and 6 above may incur some cost but it is worth to mitigate risks
