Stage of relationship with the supplier at the time of the incident:
I received a message from a person claiming to be able to supply Palm Oil and used cooking oils. He claimed to be a Ukrainian based company. I tried to call him but he would not speak to me over the phone but he said enough for me to know that he was not Ukrainian. He asked for $720 USD to have the IMFPA notarised and that he would return the money the next day. He created a dummy company in London by stealing the name of a legitimate company in Israel. When I checked the company name it looked legitimate. The phone numbers I found out later were also false. They even created false identities on WhatsApp to “talk to me” saying how honest Powa Edible Oils are and how happy they are with the whole deal. I received copies of signed contracts etc. I have also found out that they have a fake ISCC certificate https://www.iscc-system.org/certificates/fake-certificates/ where they are listed as being approved collectors and suppliers of UCO.
The headquarters in Malaysia that they advertise is in a shopping centre.
But the big thing is to call the numbers advertised and talk on the phone. If you can use something like Skype or WhatsApp where you can see the face of the person then that will be better.
Talk to people over the phone. Usually, if they won’t speak to you they have something to hide. Read documents carefully by checking fine print, dates, monetary amounts. Check addresses given by using Google Earth. Call the numbers listed and see who answers. Use the contact Us facility on the website given to see if the same person replies. DO NOT pay any deposit up front for any reason.
