I have been in the importing/wholesaling business for quite some time, spanning across different industries. However, never have I encountered a supplier as dishonest and inconsistent as Sumeng Furniture.
The whole experience starting on Alibaba, where I reached out and the sales agent Eileen Fu got in touch with me to sell me on their products. She assured me 100% that they use top grade quality wood and leather on all their furniture. Since I found their designs to be rather interesting, we decided to give it a go and placed an opening order (40ft container).
As soon as the merchandise arrived to our warehouse, we have had nothing but problems one after another. Anything that could possibly go wrong with a sofa, we’ve seen it all. Let’s start with the list below:
Leather: clearly they attempted to cut cost on one of the most costly materials in a sofa. What we received was subpar “top grain leather”. Among some of the issues were: cracks, holes, scratches, tainted dirt spots, cuts (possibly with an exacto knife), non-matching colors between two seats, paint transfers onto skin or clothes as soon as it comes into contact.
Wood: another area when they tried to cut cost. After removing the dust cover of a few sofas for inspection, our jaws dropped upon seeing the type of wood used. Imagine yourself using a machete to chop off a piece of wood from a tree. That’s exactly how those pieces of wood looked. Fragile, thin, with the bark still on them, not polished, some even eaten by termites. A total disaster.
Among the other nightmares we encountered figure: cracked wood, missing screws, crooked legs, screws poking out into the leather and PVC (eventually made a hole), back of the sofa not solid enough (made noise each time someone sat on it), they purposely cheaped out on the net that protects the seat foam from the springs (as result, the seats have started sagging), parts of the sofa were visibly crooked, S-springs coming into contact with the frame (which made an awful noise whenever someone is sitting or getting up), the metal connectors did not match between the two pieces.
She tried to shrug us off by blaming the transport company (totally impossible since there was no damage to the packaging) and get away without any responsibility. After much back and forth of complaining profusely, she finally accepted to offer some sort of support (nothing compared to what I had to offer my clients to compensate for their issues after they received the sofas).
