Stage of relationship with the supplier at the time of the incident:
We had a requirement for caustic soda flakes 99% purity. We required SGS certificate which was provided at the time of shipment. The SGS certificate met our requirements and we allowed for the shipment.
When the shipment arrived at our buyer’s warehouse, they found that the chemical was not reacting as expected. They did an analysis and found that the chemical was 17% purity instead of 99%.
The supplier had submitted the correct sample to SGS for testing, but shipped out something else. We have contacted the supplier but they just keep dragging on.
Their address is also bogus. I also got a mobile phone number from this company of someone calling himself Mr. Wu. I did a Google search of this mobile number and he seems to be operating a number of companies with different names and addresses. Beware of these scoundrels.
I should have had SGS do an onsite inspection. The problem was that it was too expensive and would have not made sense to do based on the margin we were earning. Even then, there is no guarantee that the supplier would have shipped the approved product.
Make sure you visit suppliers personally and get the personal ID copies of the owners and have them sign personal guarantees to ensure that they behave themselves.
