Stage of relationship with the supplier at the time of the incident:
I was looking for a Chinese supplier of scrap copper and aluminium and found this suppliers and started to negotiate. After they sent me photos and proforma invoice, I went to China, Tianjin to visit their warehouse and check the goods. I paid 40% advance. Then we do the packing of the scrap copper and I checked the loading.
After I put the seal myself, everything was in a private port. Then I left China and they send me the copy of BL.
Thereafter I made the full payment, after that they sent me the original Bill of Landing. A few days later, I called the shipping line to check the cargo, and it turns out that they have another BL with a different description on it!
On my BL it said scrap copper and the BL of the shipping company declared Stones! They changed the cargo after I left the country and sent me all fake documents.
Th name of the person I dealt with is Leo. I now believe they are all fakes name including his secretary called Julie.
Everything happened in July 2016. They go to your hotel to pick you up and rent warehouse with material to cheat you. They operate in Tianjin, which has lots of suppliers like that!
In the beginning they ask if you visited other suppliers or if you bought this kind of product in China before. They look very serious and once you pay the advance the try to deliver the goods as soon as possible to the private port.
They don’t let you control the cargo. They do everything, if you ask if you can work with your own forwarder, they will tell you that you’d need to pay 30% more taxes.
Never work with advance payment with China! If they are real and serious suppliers, they will work with you on L/C terms when it is about metals and chemical products. Don’t let them get control of your cargo because they can change goods. Always work with your forwarder and shipping line.
The price they offered me was very low. If you want to know if they are cheaters, it’s simple; tell them you want exwork price, after that they will ask advance without let you see any products. Then you push to see the goods and they runaway or disappear.
